Gun Free Zones

The president and his party deliberated about solutions to gun violence and arrived at a revolutionary conclusion - more gun control laws. I love original thinking. Disregard that the highest violent crime rates in the U.S. occur where the most extreme gun control laws already exist.

Ever notice that most mass shootings happen in so called “gun-free-zones”? That’s odd. Perhaps deranged killers don’t know it’s against the rules to shoot people in gun free zones. Maybe larger signs around schools, theaters and other gun free zones would help. Then mass murderers would have no legitimate excuse for their error. Sound ridiculous? Of course it is.

The idea of gun-free zones is as idealistic and wrong-headed as most gun control laws. In fact, it makes the problem worse.
Common sense explains the frequency of shootings in “gun-free zones”. Even mentally sick individuals shrewdly choose opportune places to commit mass murder. They desire unarmed, helpless victims. They seek gun-free zones, precisely so they can kill with impunity.

Am I saying the mere absence of guns invites violence? Absolutely. FBI statistics clearly show that sharp drops in violent crime rates coincide with surges in firearm sales to citizens. Actually using the firearms is typically unnecessary. The mere possession of firearms by people who respect the law instills fear into those who don't. The reason is simple. Criminals are human predators – preferring to prey on weak, helpless victims, minimizing risk to themselves.

Need more proof? Consider this: Thousands of gun shows happen in this country each year, something that terrifies gun controllers. Here’s what happens. In a large room or arena, thousands of guns and tons of ammo are displayed by vendors. Sounds dangerous, huh? It gets worse. In the immediate proximity of these weapons and ammo are thousands of people, legally examining, buying and selling firearms. According to the template constructed by gun control alarmists and the media, this is a prescription for a bloodbath.

Guess what? There have been no mass shootings at gun shows. Why? Precisely because of the healthy fear that armed citizens present to anyone with evil intent. Even deranged individuals rarely attempt violence in such a scenario because they know lethal force will immediately be used against them. It’s called a deterrent. It works.

Should we explain common sense to the president and congress? Couldn’t hurt, since there’s a conspicuous absence of it in their service of “We the People”. With regard to guns, however, they do apply it in their own lives. The president is constantly protected with guns, even in so-called gun free zones. Many members of congress have armed guards or carry concealed weapons, themselves. Hmmm. Maybe common sense with guns only works for “We the Government”.

Here’s an idea for their next legislative act. Enact a law making the entire country a “murder-free zone”. Apply it to guns, bombs, knives, vehicles and baseball bats. We’ll publicize that acts of murder are strictly prohibited everywhere, henceforth. Yes, I know we already have such laws, but ponder all of the problems Congress has solved by passing yet another law.

Just below is a quote from "Don't Sweat The Small Stuff" by Richard Carlson.  The chapter title is "Open Your Heart To Compassion."

"Every day we are given hundreds of opportunities to practice compassion in action.  We can learn to be less reactive and live with more patience.

We can smile when others are serious.  We can drive our cars more carefully, pick up litter on the streets, recycle, and reduce our consumption.

We can resolve conflicts rather than create them, and we can become less judgemental and more inclusive.  When someone is aggressive, we can teach them to be more peaceful.  Instead of waiting for an example, we can be the example.

The more compassion that enters your heart, the happier and more peaceful you will become.  By knowing that you are doing your part to create a better world-whatever form that takes-you will fill any void that exists in your life, and you will begin to find the peace you are looking for."
